How to Prepare Your Home for a Painting Job
A few simple steps before the painters arrive can save time, money, and ensure a flawless finish. Here's the complete prep checklist.

Why Preparation Determines the Quality of the Finish
Professional painters will tell you: 70% of a good paint job is preparation. Rushing the prep work leads to peeling, bubbling, uneven coverage, and paint that doesn't last. A few hours of prep saves weeks of headaches.
Step 1: Declutter and Clear Rooms
Move all furniture to the center of the room and cover it with plastic sheets. Remove wall hangings, switch plates, curtain rods, and door handles. The more you clear, the faster and cleaner the painters can work — which often saves you money on labour time.
Step 2: Deep Clean the Walls
Paint doesn't stick well to dusty, greasy, or damp walls. Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Pay special attention to kitchen walls (grease buildup) and bathroom walls (mold and moisture). Let walls dry completely — at least 24 hours — before painting begins.
Step 3: Repair Cracks and Holes
Fill nail holes with putty, repair hairline cracks with crack filler, and sand smooth once dry. If you skip this step, paint will highlight every imperfection rather than hide it.
Step 4: Protect Floors and Fixtures
Lay drop cloths or newspapers on the floor. Use painter's tape along skirting boards, door frames, and window edges. Cover electrical sockets with tape. These steps prevent paint splatter that's difficult to remove later.
Step 5: Choose the Right Paint for Each Area
- Living areas and bedrooms: Matte or eggshell finish hides imperfections
- Kitchen and bathroom: Semi-gloss or gloss finish — easier to clean, moisture-resistant
- Ceilings: Flat white paint specifically designed for ceilings
- Exterior walls: Weatherproof emulsion rated for Indian monsoon conditions
Step 6: Plan for Ventilation and Drying Time
Open windows and run fans during painting and for 48 hours after. Most interior paints need 4–6 hours between coats and 72 hours before washing. Avoid painting during monsoon season when humidity prevents proper curing.
